Locally Owned Bookstores in Dallas

If you enjoy curling up in the evening with a good book, then head to one of the locally owned bookstores in Dallas, which offer everything from the latest bestsellers to out-of-print titles.

Those near our Mockingbird apartments include:

Deep Vellum Books

Found in Deep Ellum, Deep Vellum Books showcases small and independent publishers. Owner Will Evans has a knack for finding outstanding under-told stories and connecting them with audiences. In 2016, the shop was called one of the “10 Best Shopping Destinations in Dallas” by USA Today. The authors come from across town and around the world. There’s something for everyone, and the staff enjoys making suggestions.

Deep Vellum also hosts monthly poetry readings and literary events, along with occasional open mic nights and writers’ workshops.

The Wild Detectives

When two friends decided to combine their passion for books and beer, they started The Wild Detectives. It opened in 2014 and was quickly called the “Best New Thing in Town” by the Dallas Observer. The atmosphere encourages conversation, and the books are co-curated by the local literary community. After finding your next great read, enjoy a pint of Texas Ale Project.

Lucky Dog Books

Lucky Dog specializes in used books, movies, and music. It still uses paper gift certificates and hosts a weekday happy hour between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. Guests can enjoy cookies and ice-cold beverages as they shop. The shelves come stocked with all genres, as well as magazines and audiobooks.

If you would like to learn Gaelic, then don’t miss the shop’s Irish language class. The sessions are held on Saturday afternoons and also focus on Ireland’s history and culture.
