Called one of America’s most beloved painters, Georgia O’Keeffe is best known for her depictions of the American Southwest. Born in Wisconsin, she later accepted a teaching position in Texas, where she explored abstract natural forms. The museum began acquiring her work in 1965. This exhibit features Red Cannas, Dark Mesa with Pink Sky, Black Patio Next Door, and more.
Hats in American Art
Hats in American Art is a unique exhibit that focuses on works of art that showcase the many different types of headwear. One of the highlights includes the cowboy hat. Originally created of small mammal fur, it was built to withstand the natural elements. John Stetson invented more stylish and practical designs in 1865. After these fresher designs became readily available, they began to appear both in films and the fashion world.
